I continued by lab involvement with the Center for the Science of Social Connection. This quarter, we started a new project. This time, we used our coding system to identify and rate microaggressions between white doctors and black patients. This project gave me an intimate perspective on why the health system isn't always the most welcoming or culturally sensitive to people of color. I hope to use the knowledge I gained from this project later on in my career with psychology.
At the start of winter quarter, I applied for a study abroad in Jamaica through the Disability Studies program, and I got in!!! I'm thrilled, and can't wait to see what kind of experiences this trip will bring me. The agenda includes an entire week in a Deaf village, and since ASL is pretty similar to Jamaican Sign Language, I should be able to communicate pretty well with the residents. I hope to see comparisons between American Deaf culture and Jamaican Deaf culture.
This is my final paper for my "Introduction to Disability Studies" class. This class has been one of the most meaningful courses I've taken at UW so far. This paper is about the 'supercrip' stereotype of disabled people in media representation. It exemplifies what I've learned about the social construction of disability, and the social model of disability. I grew up with Deaf parents, and I never fully understood Deaf culture until taking this class. The content of this course will influence the future of my career with the Deaf community, and I sincerely hope I can keep this knowledge and perspective close to my heart for years to come.
In my "Understanding Statistics in Psychology" class, I learned how to code using RStudio! I've never encountered coding in my life before this quarter. It was extremely difficult for me to learn, but I finally got the hang of it and produced this assignment. In this document, you can see how I conducted a chi-squared test for independence on R with the data from our class survey. I was testing to see if preference between morning or night varies with class rank.
