I started a new job this quarter! I am now the ASUW Student Disability Commission's Assistant Director. This is my first job where I feel passionate about the work I'm doing. I manage a team of 10 interns, oversee the internal organization of our commission, and plan community outreach events. I've learned a lot about the structural issues at UW for students with disabilities, and I now have a lot of passion in bringing awareness to those issues.
This is the proposal document for the WOOF (We Open Our Futures) program. I joined a task force this quarter to create this program. It would allow people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to take classes at UW. This document is the product of a weekly 2 hour meeting, all quarter long. It outlines the program details, including courses, workshops, and employee job descriptions. Working on this project has opened my eyes to how many barriers are faced by people with I/DD, and how much there is that we can do to break those barriers. UW is a huge institution with tons of resources for students, so why not open up those resources to people who could use them?
For my "Power, Inequality, and Markets" class, I made this video! It explains how the "American Dream" is a socially constructed scam to support capitalism. The idea that everyone can make it if they work hard enough has been disproved by data time and time again. Women, people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ folks, etc., all have a much harder time in this big ol capitalistic society than straight white men. Watch the video to find out more!
