Once again... I started a new job this quarter! I'm happy to say that I am now the ASUW Student Disability Commission Director. It's a big testament to the hard work I put in last year as Assistant Director, and I'm absolutely thrilled and looking forward to what projects I can do this year in this new role.
In September (Early Fall Start time), I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Jamaica for a study abroad through the LSJ Department. We spent most of our time visiting disability-related organizations and aging-related organizations, to see how aging persons and disabled persons were being supported. I met people and had experiences that I will NEVER forget.
This essay is from my DIS ST 332 (Social Construction of Mental Health and Madness in America) class. It's an analysis of the prevalence of depression among Deaf adults. Basically- it's much more prevalent among Deaf people than the general population, but this should be attributed to audism (oppression of Deaf people, language, and culture), NOT the hearing loss itself. I had a lot of fun writing this essay, since it has a strong connection to my experiences growing up with Deaf parents, one of whom has depression.
